We’ll be honest: Of all the Mason jar gifts a person could make, homemade Nutella is the one that makes our heart skip a beat.
There is something so decadent — and fun — about recreating this traditional European treat at home and packaging it up to surprise family, friends or neighbors. Will you save money? Probably not.
But you’ll have a ball making this — and we think it’s even more delicious than the original.
This homemade Nutella recipe is courtesy of Little Spice Jar. You’ll need the following:
8 ounces of hazelnuts or filberts
½ Teaspoon vanilla
¼ Teaspoon salt
1/3 to ½ Cup powdered sugar
3 Tablespoons coco powder
6 ounces semisweet chocolate (bars work best)
1 Tablespoon of a nut/seed oil such as walnut or sunflower. Coconut oil or vegetable oil will work in a pinch.
See full printable recipe card and instructions below.
To make your own gift worthy of Pinterest, we recommend packing it in 4oz sized mason jars, You can take your Nutella-filled jars and use a bit of festive twine to attach a small wooden spoon and a sticker label on the top.
Level up your homemade gift with mason jar silicone sleeves for 4oz jars! This adorable new sleeve fits the 4oz size and comes in packs of 6. Mason Jar Gifts
Homemade Nutella is decadent, delicious and easy to make.
8 ounces of hazelnuts or filberts
½ Teaspoon vanilla
¼ Teaspoon salt
1/3 to ½ Cup powdered sugar
3 Tablespoons coco powder
6 ounces semisweet chocolate (bars work best)
1 Tablespoon of a nut/seed oil such as walnut or sunflower. Coconut oil or vegetable oil will work in a pinch.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and place a rack in the center of it. Put the nuts on a baking tray in a single layer and spread them out. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove the tray halfway through and give a toss for even browning. Let nuts cool for 10 minutes.
Place the hazelnuts on a kitchen towel and rub vigorously to help loosen the skin. (If some of the skin doesn't come off, that's okay.) Melt chocolate in the microwave in 20 second increments, stopping the microwave and stirring in between until the chocolate melts.
Put the nuts in a food processor and run for 2-3 minutes or until a smooth, glossy paste forms. Add the vanilla, salt, cocoa powder, melted chocolate and ⅓ cup powdered sugar for less sweet Nutella or ½ cup for sweeter Nutella. Let the food processor run for 1 to 2 minutes while you slowly drizzle in the oil. The Nutella will be runny when you stop the machine but will thicken as it cools.
Place Nutella in a Mason jar. It will keep at room temperature for up to one month.
